This garden was built on the 14 floor of a balcony facing south/west.  The hot, dry sun baked the previous garden and a weekend away meant dead plants.  This custom self-watering garden solved the problem.  A waterproof seal in the bottom of the garden box creates a reservoir that can be filled with water. This creates a constant water source for the plants. An overflow tube drains off excess water when there is ample rain. The owner can leave for a week and the garden is fine. It is past frost and spring planting is complete in the photo above. See below and scroll to the right to see photos of this garden throughout the season.
